March 2007 Archive of News and MusingsTuesday, March 20, 2007 Welcome Twila and Debra!
I'm excited to welcome two new members to our Board of Directors. Dr. Debra Heath-Thornton (pictured, left) and Twila Glenn (pictured, right) were elected to our Board of Directors earlier this evening. Debra is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and Sociology at Messiah College. She is passionate about restorative justice, especially communities surrounding persons in crisis with support and accountability as we're doing at BHA through our transitional housing program, specifically our Bagwashi Circles. She is also very involved in the Allison Hill Weed & Seed Neighborhood Revitalization efforts, and brings a wealth of experience to our organization. Twila Glenn recently joined the ranks of Century 21 Piscioneri Realty after a career in banking. As a city resident and business leader she is excited to use her experience and connections to the benefit of families at BHA working hard to get back on their feet. Thank you, Twila and Debra, for your willingness to commit your time and talents to BHA in this capacity! I want to finish by thanking Margarita Mejias and Ervin Huston for their work on our Board as they recently concluded terms of service. Posted by Steve Schwartz (3/20/2007 9:35:49 PM | link)
Saturday, March 10, 2007 Celebrating Moya
This past Thursday evening, we threw a party for Moya and her family to celebrate their graduation from our program. She's worked hard on employment and financial goals these past two years, and we admire her tenacity in the face of extremely difficult experiences that life dealt her. You can read more of Moya's story in the Spring 2007 edition of our newsletter, Foundations for Success (PDF 735k). Our staff, board, participants and few other invited guests partied with a delicious meal, tributes and sharing about Moya and her family, and the worldwide debut of Stevie Marley and the Hummel Street Wailers singing their soon to be hit reggae number, "Moy-a!" Thanks to our event photographer Andy Rash, you can see more pictures below from our celebration. Moya has become a personal friend to myself, wife and boys, and is moving to a house not too far from where I live in the city of Harrisburg. So we look forward to staying in touch and our families continuing to grow in friendship. (A word about graduations: We’re changing how we celebrate graduations. Last year we held a big banquet at a local hotel, but banquets work best on a set schedule, while participant families graduate at
random intervals. Therefore, we threw an in-house party for Moya at this time, and she’ll be
invited to our Ministry Celebration Banquet scheduled for September 7, 2007 and held each year in the fall
from now on. Mark your calendar and plan to join us!) Moya's guests fellowship prior to dinner.
Case Manager Chris Patrick presents Moya and her daughter Pookie with a photo album of memories from her time at BHA.
Moya's family and the staff gather for a picture to remember the evening.
Stevie Marley and the Hummel Street Wailers make their worldwide debut...which doubles at their worldwide farewell performance.
The Wailers bongo player, with an uncanny resemblence to BHA's Property Manager, Dennis Saylor.
The staff...er...band wishes Moya well on all her future endeavors.
