February 2008 Archive of News and MusingsWednesday, February 20, 2008 Happy Adoption Day to Us BHA is a family ministry. We exist to serve families. We seek to share a family-like atmosphere among our participants and staff. And we think of our volunteers, donors, supporting churches, board members, etc. as our extended family members. On that note, I'd like share some "family" news, much like I would if a staff member got married or a participant gave birth. Yesterday, I became a dad. Well, actually, I became a dad in September 2005 when two darling little boys (ages 4 and a half months, and just turned 2) joined Elizabeth and I and our household, a few days before our 15th wedding anniversary...what an anniversary gift! We were foster parents to John Luis and John Carlos...biological brothers. There were many twists and turns in the time since--too many to share here--but basically, about a year ago they became available for adoption. And yesterday, in the Dauphin County courthouse, in front of the Honorable Judge Todd Hoover and about 45 of our Bagwashi, including grandparents, siblings, cousins, teachers, pastors, case workers, and very dear friends, the newly named John-Luis and Carlos officially became our sons in the eyes of the law. As I walked into the court room, it was hard to contain my emotion as it hit me what this means. We'll be a forever family! Many of you have known bits and pieces of our journey over the past two and a half years...and I wanted you to know that the adoption was finalized yesterday. And now John-Luis and Carlos are not only in our hearts, but officially our sons in whom we are so very well pleased. Here we are shortly before heading into the courtroom:
 Introducing John-Luis Glenn Schwartz:
Carlos Emmanuel Steven Schwartz shares his new name...at least we think that's what he said:
I know this picture is too small for this narrow column, but I want to give you a sense of the support we felt yesterday at this joyous occasion, so here is almost everybody that joined us at the hearing when Judge Hoover allowed us all to gather behind his desk following the proceedings:
Here is a short YouTube video highlighting the boys at the adoption hearing:
John-Luis and Carlos Testify THANKS SO MUCH to all of you who offered love and support and encouragement to us throughout this journey. Update: Added YouTube video link. Posted by Steve Schwartz (2/20/2008 3:15:21 PM | link)

The Rite Aid Foundation has chosen to share some love with homeless single moms this month through a generous grant.
