What is Women Helping Women (WHW)?
An opportunity for professional women, women’s groups and others to see homeless women succeed and build a brighter future for their families. The goal of Women Helping Women is to raise at least $15,000 in support as we continue to grow to serve more families during tough economic times.
What is the commitment?
Between January 8 (kickoff) and March 19, 2010, we are asking Women Helping Women participants to commit
to one of the following:
- Tell 5 friends about BHA and ask them to join in supporting the WHW initiative*
- Plan a fundraiser to raise support for the WHW initiative*
- Make a gift of $250 or more to BHA in addition to your regular annual giving.
A celebration event will take place on March 25 for all participants.
How do I get started?
Contact Heather Kelly, BHA’s Director of Development at hkelly@bha-pa.org or (717) 233-6016.In dialogue with Heather you will:
- Set a goal for a specific dollar amount that you want to raise.
- Decide on your plan for raising that money.
- Make arrangements for any coaching or materials you need.
* BHA staff will provide you with any training or materials you need.Posted by Steve Schwartz (12/15/2009 12:47:25 PM | link)

Friday, December 11, 2009 A Christmas Message of Hope A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn Dear Friend, These are weary times. Surrounded by stories of economic hardship, layoffs, war, crime, political polarization and fear, we naturally become weary. I hear heartbreaking tales at BHA daily. But the Christmas story is a story of redemption. Of evil being overcome by good – of new life, second chances and sacrificial love. It’s the story of a weary world finding a reason to rejoice. This Christmas season I want to share one of these stories. Monica (not her real name) came to BHA 15 months ago...
I have been an addict for over ten years. I was in a very abusive relationship with my kids’ father. He is also an addict and very controlling. I had never really been on my own before. I have always been afraid to be by myself. I knew I wanted something better for my children but he had always threatened that if I left he would find me and get me. I knew I wanted to leave but was very afraid of change and the what ifs.
Finally, Monica found the courage to go to a battered women’s shelter where she learned about BHA...
By the grace of God I got accepted into this wonderful and life changing program. When I first got here I had nothing but 3 suitcases and I was a fugitive. Now I have an apartment full of furniture. I have gone to court get my warrant lifted and I’m taking care of my legal matters
So how has her time at BHA helped Monica to prepare for a brighter future?...continue reading "A Christmas Message of Hope"... Posted by Steve Schwartz (12/11/2009 12:47:32 AM | link)
Thursday, December 10, 2009 Welcome Tausha!
As part of our vision to enhance our direct services to the children in our program, we recently created a new part-time position: Childcare Coordinator. We're thrilled to welcome Tausha Bulgrien to this role, and to the BHA family as our newest staff member. Tausha is launching this position by developing a curriculum-based childcare program for the times when the women in our program are meeting for their weekly support group session. Tausha will also train and coordinate our childcare volunteers. She has a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education and a Masters Degree in Special Education, and has significant experience working with children. Tausha, her husband Josh, and their three children Micaiah, Ezra and Eliyah live in Hummelstown and attend Harrisburg Brethren In Christ Church.
