April 2009 Archive of News and MusingsThursday, April 23, 2009 This Mother's Day...Celebrate Motherhood by Supporting Single Moms
There are three distinct ways you can show your support for single moms this Mother's Day*. Join us in one or more of the following ways to make this Mother's Day meaningful and memorable:
- Play or Sponsor the
BHA Golf Tournament Friday, May 15 More details
- Ride or Sponsor a Rider in the
Spring Thaw Bike Tour Saturday, May 16 More details
- Make a Memorial Gift
in Honor or in Memory of a special woman...
Instructions: How to honor the special lady or ladies in your life with a unique present this Mother’s Day — a donation to BHA in her honor to bless homeless women and children on their journey of healing.
- Send your donation to BHA, and we’ll send you a tax receipt for your gift whether $25, $250 or $2,500. You can mail it to us at BHA, 219 Hummel Street, Harrisburg, PA 17104, or submit the donation through our website's donation page.
- For Honor gifts, close to Mother’s Day
we’ll mail a postcard to the woman/women you list (please provide a mailing address for each honoree), letting them know that a gift has been made by you in their honor (the amount of your gift will not be shared.)
- You may also choose to make a loving gift in memory of a special woman who is no longer living. Please include the woman or women's name(s) along with your gift.
- For all honor/memorial gifts received before Mother’s Day (May 10), we’ll list your name and the woman/women you choose to honor/remember in the next issue of the BHA newsletter (again, the amount of your gift will not be listed).
* Taking part in these Mother’s Day Weekend celebration opportunities does NOT get you off the hook for taking your mom, wife, daughter or other special female out for dinner. Posted by Steve Schwartz (4/23/2009 11:03:13 AM | link)
Thursday, April 23, 2009 Farewell (and Congratulations) This spring we're saying goodbye to two very dedicated Board members. Roger Shenk, owner of Oakmont Enterprises, served on our Board for five years. He was a great source of housing rehab expertise--as he is a general contractor--as well as general business acumen. Among other accomplishments, Roger headed up our charity house building project in 2006 that netted $85,000 for our work. Roger plans to stay active and involved in the work of BHA. On the heels Roger moving on, we learned some exciting news about Board Member Debra Heath-Thornton. Debra, a Criminal Justice and Sociology professor at Messiah College, was recently hired as the dean of the Campolo College of Graduate and Professional Studies at Eastern University. This new role is wonderful for Debra and for Eastern University...but it also means she'll be moving to the Philadelphia area and continued service on our Board will not be feasible. Thanks for your service these past two years, Debra, and congratulations on your new adventure! Posted by Steve Schwartz (4/23/2009 9:27:31 AM | link)
Wednesday, April 22, 2009 Welcome New Jenn! I'm pleased to introduce Jenn Ryder, our new administrative assistant...or as we call her "New Jenn" since she's the second Jennifer R. on our staff. Jenn lives in Allison Hill in the Sycamore House, an outreach of St. Andrews Episcopal Church where four adults live together and serve the community. In addition to that role, Jenn has time for a part-time position and we think its no coincidence that we met Jenn the day after we lost our former administrative assistant. Welcome to the BHA team New Jenn!

Wednesday, April 22, 2009 Welcome Mechanic Grove! We recently welcomed a new church to the Brethren Housing "Association." Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren in Quarryville has been supporting the work of BHA financially, sending volunteers for rehab projects, and taking a greater interest in our work for several years now. In March, the church board voted to become a Member Church in our association. The BHA board voted shortly thereafter to welcome Mechanic Grove to our growing list of member churches. We're excited to have Mechanic Grove's committment and passion and support behind us as we work hard to help homeless families get back on their feet.
