February 2010 Archive of News and MusingsFriday, February 26, 2010 Spring Thaw Bike Tour--ALL NEW IN 2010 We have exciting news about the Spring Thaw Bike Tour. The 2010 event will take place April 24, in partnership with the Harrisburg Bicycle Club as part of their biggest cycling event of the year. The Club has agreed to welcome our riders to join with the hundreds of riders that take part in their event. This allows us to offer five all new routes. While our event in past years targeted more experienced riders with routes 25 miles and above, this year we have those routes as well as a 6.6 mile family friendly route. You can read detailed descriptions of the routes on the Harrisburg Bicycle Club's event site, and all the details for riding in or sponsoring the event on behalf of BHA are on our Events page.
We're looking forward to a great year...and a partnership that can help us grow our event while allowing our staff to spend less time on ride details and keep our focus on helping homeless families on their journer to greater stability and self-sufficiency. Thursday, February 04, 2010 Jewelry Making For Haiti In January, volunteer Jill Osielski led BHA program participants and Bagwashi volunteers in making handmade jewelry. Jill recently spent several months in the Dominican Republic through an internship with BuildaBridge. During this time she gained experience in using the arts to teach life skills and promote hope and healing. Jill led our group in a evening of making earrings which were then donated for a fundraiser concert, auction and craft show at the Midtown Scholar Bookstore on January 31 that raised over $5,500 for Haiti earthquake relief. We look forward to working with Jill in the future and exploring how the curriculum of BuildABridge could enchance our life skills training. (All photos below are courtesy of Jill Osielski.) Jill prepares the group for their jewelry making session.
