Major Gifts Officer


The Major Gifts Officer is an integral part of the overall team charged with advancing the mission of Brethren Housing Association.

The position is directly responsible for the following areas:

  • Donor Relations

    • Build relationships with individual donors; donors who gave last year, but not this year; donors who gave some year, but not recently; prospective donors

    • Ensure additional donor contacts throughout year

    • Maintain contact with member and supporting churches

  • Annual Fund/Capital/Multi-Year Campaigns

    • Create annual giving campaigns in accordance with development plan and organization’s goals

    • Grow “Thriving Families” giving program

      • Individual donor visits and in-person requests for gifts to the program.

      • Coordinate quarterly e-newsletters from Executive Director.

      • Plan and execute small donor appreciation events.

  • Prospect Research/Data Management

    • Update eTapestry to keep it relevant and personal

    • Manage database of contacts and interactions

  • Planned Giving

    • Identify prospects for stewardship and qualified conversations

    • Work with planned giving partner to meet annual goals


This individual will work in tandem with all other staff to achieve program goals. The Major Gifts Officer must be able to work both with a team and independently with little supervision. This person must be exceedingly well organized, dependable, and enjoy the challenges of working in a fast-paced campaign-oriented environment.


This individual will report to the Executive Director and will work to influence growth and drive success. They will implement proven fundraising strategies and cultivate partnerships and alliances that will promote growth and awareness in the community.


Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Complete 10 face-to-face visits per month to ask donors for financial support or set the table for a future request for financial support.

    • Make no less than 40 direct asks for financial support in person with individual donors per year from these visits.

  • Develop donor communication strategies with individual donors, member and supporting churches, and other channels of giving.

  • Coordinate/conduct meetings with assigned donors/prospects for solicitation of annual and planned gifts.

  • Build and maintain partnerships with current and potential donors

  • Analyze and develop plan to expand matching gift program (SECA, United Way, etc.).

  • Develop and implement strategies and tactics to increase annual giving revenue and participation rates.

  • Other tasks as assigned.



  • At least 3 years of experience in revenue generation. Nonprofit experience preferred.

  • Ability to appreciate and communicate a passion for helping others achieve stable housing.

  • A good listener to understand the passions and goals of a donor. 

  • Working knowledge of data management computers/software, Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and the Internet.

  • Bilingual preferred, but not required.

  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and oral, with public speaking ability that will inspire and motivate others.

  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with board members, staff, participants and donors.

  • Experience and/or working knowledge of planned giving practices and an enthusiasm for program growth.

  • Self-motivated, results oriented leader with strong organizational skills and attention to detail. High level of diplomacy, patience, and flexibility.
